Liminal Arts Co-operative is an arts venture based in East London working with creatives.

We launched in 2023 with exhibitions in May and October.  We’re pursuing creative projects in East London and we plan to be working with our broader network of creatives as far away as Istanbul, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The Liminal Arts team has experience of work in the fine arts and the  commercial graphic design industry over many years spanning a variety of cultures and contexts.

Our cooperative, and each member, aspires to be:

• Communal not individual
• Professional not passable
• Organic not institutional
• Accessible not exclusive
• Generative not sparse
• Broad not narrow
• Collaborative not competitive
• Love under not power over
• Encouraging of excellence not pretentious about mediocrity

WHY LIMINAL?

In Conversation

Liminal means ‘a threshold’ between one state and a new one.  It’s typically associated with a rite of passage. During such rites a person stands on the threshold between their estblished way, community or identity and a new one.

It’s been suggested that “during liminal periods of all kinds, social hierarchies may be reversed  or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain, and future outcomes once taken for granted may be thrown into doubt. The dissolution of order during liminality creates a fluid, malleable situation that enables new institutions and customs to become  established”*

Liminal Arts aims to be such a space, where creatives are able to explore themes, processes and ideas together.
